Radiometer is the market leader in transcutaneous blood gas monitors – medical devices that measure blood gases via a sensor applied to the skin, therefore dispensing with the need to draw blood.

THE CHALLENGE

The number of medical devices that healthcare professionals have to work with is growing continually – making training both time-consuming and costly.
That’s why we made it our mission to develop an easy-to-use and self-explanatory  device that avoids life-threatening mistakes in day-to-day use.

THE MAIN INSIGHT

Our in-depth research revealed that medical professionals’ needs vary depending on who they care for – whether it’s premature babies, people in intensive care or sleep lab patients.
It was crucial to give healthcare professionals the possibility of setting the device to different modes that only display the information they actually need, thus ensuring they can focus on what really matters.

NEONATAL CHALLENGE

24/7 blood gas measurement is essential for premature babies. But the sensor has to heat up in order to work with the necessary precision.
Nurses have to weigh up the need for accurate results against the risk of skin injuries.

THE SOLUTION: A SMART TIMER

We developed a smart algorithm that links temperature and time, automatically preventing burns and informing healthcare professionals when they need to reposition the sensor.

Goodbye cable clutter: a prominent spool on the front of the product makes the cable with the precious skin sensor easy to handle, it optimizes the workspace too.

The lightweight device is robust, compatible with gloves and easy to carry around thanks to an integrated handle.

ITERATIVE DEVELOPMENT

Our ideas and solutions were subjected to continuous testing with end users. Acceptance and usability tests with physical mock-ups and interactive prototypes enabled us to come up with the most optimal and safe solutions.

We created a unique, 360° degree design solution – from the overall product gesture right down to the last detail of the settings menu. The iconic and self-explanatory design provides users with clear guidance and feedback at all times: the clear-cut hierarchy of the screen elements makes the TCM5 operating system highly intuitive and safe to use.
